Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) satellite image of sea surface temperatures associated with the upwelling in the California Current system off the west of North America. Note the eddys and filaments of water that spin off from the cold rim of upwelled water along the coast. Black indicates cloud cover and the dark orange/brown is very warm water in the Salton Sea and northern part of the Gulf of California.
