The St. Francis Dam used to sit in the San Francisquito Canyon Road about nine miles out of the town Saugus. Saugus is about 45 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

To reach the former site of the dam from Long Beach you must first take the 605 Freeway north until you hit the 5 Freeway. Continue on the 5 Freeway north for roughly 35 miles until you come across the 14 Freeway in Sylmar. Take the 14 north for a mile or two until you reach Highway 126 (also called San Fernando Road). Take this road north or east for about 5 miles.

After five miles, you should be in the town Saugus. Head north out of Saugus on Bouquet Canyon Road. Continue on Bouquet Canyon Road for less then a mile, when you should reach San Francisquito Road. Turn left on this road, and continue for about 3-4 miles. The former dam site is about a mile beyond a public swimming pool, and a powerhouse. We suggest picking up the U.S.G.S's topographic map of the Warm Springs Mountain Quadrangle, or a copy of Field Trip Guide #9 printed at the Spring 1998 Meeting of the Cordilleran Section of the Geologic Society of America.
